Department of Media Studies was started in the academic year 2014. In the present global scenario, Mass Communication has emerged as one of the most 'sought after' subjects of study in Social Sciences as it proximately communicates with the shifting knowledge, real demand and diverse needs of the society. In the light of the expanding prospects of knowledge, constant endeavours have been made to include communication studies in many of the universities in the world. In MG University, this is the first endeavour in this regard.

The department of Media Studies was established in the year 2014. Department offers BA Mass Communication & Journalism programme.The under graduate programme in B.A. Mass Communication and Journalism includes: (a) 10 common courses, (b) 14 core courses, (c) 4 complementary courses (d) 1 open course and (e) 1 choice based course (f) 1 internship. The students can select any choice based course offered by the department which offers the core courses, depending on the availability of teachers and infrastructural facilities in the institution. Open course shall be offered in any subject and the students shall have the option to do courses offered by other departments. As a part of this programme students are given exposure to different areas like Methodologies and Perspectives of Media studies, Reporting and Feature Writing, Editing, Design and Pagination for Print, Photo Journalism, Advertising, Radio Production, Translation Studies, Television Production, Specialized Journalism, Development Communication, Environmental Studies and Human Rights, Media Management, Laws and Ethics, Film Studies, Public Relation and Corporate Communication, Media, Culture and Society, Documentary Production etc.
Students are given practical exposure to various aspects in media production through trainings, workshops and internships at leading media houses in Kerala like Amrita TV, Jeevan TV, Kairali TV, Victers TV, Public Relations Department of Kerala, Malayala Manorama daily, Mangalam daily, Deepika daily etc. Students are also given immense opportunity to take part in various stages of media production through out their programme at SGC Community TV, the first ever community telecasting centre in Asia.
Many of our alumni are placed in leading media houses all across the state. We have three experienced and dedicated faculties for handling mass communication core courses in our department.
