Department of Commerce (Aided)

Established in 1980, the Department of Commerce (Aided) at St. George’s College, Aruvithura, marked the commencement of commerce education in the IVth Group stream .From its foundation under the leadership of Mr. P. M. Mathew and early faculty members such as Mr. Edsel Joseph and Mr. Jacob James K. Veedon, the department has evolved into a dynamic academic unit with a steadfast commitment to excellence.

The department offers a B.Com degree programme specializing in Finance & Taxation, in alignment with the MGU_UGP (Honours), leading to an Honours Degree. The department currently offers a value-added course (VAC) on Consumer Affairs and Protection, multi-disciplinary course (MDC) on Business Organisation and Entrepreneurship. Complementing the core programme offered under old CBCS system the department offers an open course on Capital Market and Investment Management .

The Department of Commerce (Aided) is led by a team of highly qualified and committed faculty members who play a vital role in maintaining academic excellence. Sherin Elizabeth John (M.Com, M.Phil), Dr. Denny Thomas (M.Com, MBA, PGDPRM), and Dr. Mithun John (Ph.D., M.Com, NET) bring diverse academic backgrounds and industry-oriented perspectives to the classroom. Their areas of expertise include accounting, finance, taxation, and business management. The faculty actively engages in mentoring students, organizing academic events, and integrating ICT tools in teaching. Their dedication ensures a student-centric learning environment focused on critical thinking, employability, and holistic development.

The department integrates technology-enabled teaching and real-world exposure through regular industry visits, seminars, and guest lectures, thereby bridging the gap between theory and practice . Students also benefit from access to modern computer labs with up-to-date software and internet connectivity, ensuring competency in essential commerce and IT tools .
