Department of Physics
The Department of Physics came into existence in 1965 when St. George’s College, Aruvithura started functioning as a junior college for the Pre-Degree classes. With the upgrading of the college in 1978 and the introduction of new courses, the department gradually got expanded with respect to the strength of the staff, library resources and laboratory facilities. A long cherished dream came true when B. Sc. Physics was started in 1993 with a sanctioned strength of 20 students. The department was elevated as a post graduate dept. with the commencement of M. Sc. Physics in 1999 with a sanctioned strength of 10 students. With the introduction of the semester system under the CBCSS scheme, the department offers two new courses for UG programme: Physics in Everyday Life (open course) and Information technology (choice based course). The specialization course for Postgraduate programme is Advanced Electronics.Every academic year the department provides bridge courses for the fresher’s.
The well equipped physics laboratory enables students to experiment and learn. The department is at the forefront to adopt the latest IT technologies using ICT to support academics. The constantly updating physics departmental library consists of 460 books which is available to students for references and 2200 digital books covering various branches of Physics, Electronics and Information Technology. The Department of Physics offers certificate courses in "Personal Science Laboratory-Expeyes" and offeres coaching programs for UGC-CSIR test (MSc students )and JAM (BSc students).
