SYLLABUS

BASIC ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY (Theory Course)

 

Contact Lecture Hours: 20

 

UNIT 1: General Introduction (3 hours)

Precision and accuracy, types of errors, ways to reduce errors, calibration of glass wares.

Preparation of indicators, reagents and standard solutions.

 

UNIT 2: Titrimetric Methods of Analysis (5 hours)

Types of titrations: Requirements for titrimetric analysis. Concentration systems: Molarity, formality, normality, wt% ppm, milliequalence and millimoles-problems. Primary and secondary

standards, criteria for primary standards, Limitation of volumetric analysis, endpoint and equivalence point.

 

UNIT 3: Solvent Extraction (3 hours)

Distribution law, Determination of distribution ratio, Batch extraction, continuous extraction,

discontinuous extraction, counter current extraction.

 

UNIT 4: Industrial Analysis (4 hours)

Pigments: General Outlines of identification and analysis of inorganic pigments –coloured and

cool pigments. Pesticides: Definition and classification of pesticides, analysis of the following in outline – DDT, Malathion

 

UNIT 5: Environmental Analysis (5 hours)

a) Analysis of water- colour, Odour, pH, taste, conductivity, dissolved solid, hardness, DO, COD,

BOD, chlorides, sulphates, nitrites and phosphates.

b) Analysis of air- Sampling, particulate matter, gaseous pollutants-SOx, NOx, COx and organic

Pollutants.
