Experiential Learning

Experiential Learning

It is often said that a mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its older dimensions. Keeping this in mind, educators, faculty and non-teaching staff at St. George’s College, Aruvithura, relentlessly work towards fostering an academic culture that lays emphasis on learning by doing. This then explains why almost all the courses run at this exemplary institution has an experiential component to it. Be it science laboratories, language lab or the state-of-the-art media centre, each of these infrastructural facilities play an inalienable role in transforming this college into a cradle of academic excellence. Students are encouraged to partake in several workshops, field trips, internships, exhibitions and similar other intellectually stimulating endeavours that give them considerable food for thought.

Interactive Learning

It goes without saying that today’s youth hold the key to a future that is located at the interface of technology and change. To adequately prepare them for harnessing the true potential of tomorrow’s possibilities, it is imperative that we marry pedagogy with cutting edge technologies of the present. In order to actualize this, St. George’s College, Aruvithura has envisioned a range of initiatives that include but are not limited to ICT enabled classrooms that encourage the use of PowerPoint presentations among other things, interactive class boards, distribution of academic resources through the digital medium and so on. It is absolutely certain that these measures will no doubt, keep the trajectory of progress right on track.

Collaborative Learning

The Institution gives prominence on the intellectual growth of students not only through activities conducted within the campus but also through various collaborative learning approaches. This approach aims to enhance the learners' ability to process and synthesis information and concepts by working together with different groups.

The management and the departments make collaborative learning possible by conducting various onsite programs in industrial settings, teaching projects like Care School, and by signing MoU with parties of interest in a way that contributes to the enrichment of skills like self- management and leadership and employee skills. Moreover, the active working of the Placement Cell of the campus helps the students to get recruited and analyze the job prospects at an early stage through recruitment drives and job fairs. St. George’s College, Aruvithura also stands out in this approach by providing insights to students and offering them open discussion platforms on different subjects by collaborating with resource persons from several national and international organizations and institutions, thus stepping away from conventional rote learning of facts and figures.

Critical Thinking

The institution envisions to mould the future generation who are competent enough to meet the requirements of the modern digital world. One of the crucial elements which would help them to excel in this competitive world is critical thinking. To think critically is to think creatively or to think independently. So as to foster this habit of critical thinking, the institution prioritizes the learning needs and demands of the students so that they become competent workers and responsible individuals. Even the classroom ambience widens their perspective through the practices of group discussions and debates monitored by the teachers and it refines their thinking skills.

Various clubs and cells function in our college aims at serving the same vision such as Debate Club, Oratory Club, Chess Club etc. While participating in the activities offered by these clubs and cells students can imbibe a spirit of critical thinking/ independent thinking and it enhances the ability of problem-solving and decision making.

Independent Learning

Apart from the classroom learning experiences, St. George’s College Aruvithura adopts numerous strategies to cultivate self-learning or independent learning among the students. SGCians are motivated to learn by themselves which would supplement what they learn in the classrooms. They are free to make use of the pool of resources such as the newly built library which offers a perfect serene ambience to read and learn at their own pace and time, the network lab and the language lab so as to enhance their knowledge and skills. Moreover, the institution is recognised as a Local Chapter of SWAYAM/NPTEL courses run by MHRD, Govt. of India. Students can choose a course of their choice and get certificated from prestigious IITs and CCE which would add colours to their resume. Also, it brings out the self-learning initiative of the students and fosters the habit of keeping oneself updated always by means of self-study. With the digitalisation of our education, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam too offers a MOOC course on Organic Farming for the UG students envisaging a better future for the young generation.
